MadTapeMan
A legend in my own mind

Suddenly there are a lot of guests looking around.  Did people find there way here from that adventure games forum or are the spambots circling again?

I'm pretty sure they are Yahoo bots, come to index the board again.

*remembers how the last thread dedicated to the huge amount of guests turned out *

Where's Gijs?  I could use some cheap entertainment.

His rates have gone up, I hear. He's no longer "cheap" entertainment.

It could cost an arm and a leg to kill Gijs now.

Also, my use of the word cheap was not descriptive of Gijs or you but rather of this:
kills Gijs
Dies
Kills again
Dies again
repeat for 8 pages

Re spambots... I am at my wit's end! I'm going to have implement the CH (Categories Hierarchy) mod into the phpbb-based forums I administer. I already have the CH mod for two forums, and guess what? No spambot registrations.

I'm glad, because I'm only a beginner with php, and I didn't want to take the time out of my current incredibly busy schedule (It is! It is!) to work out how to deter spambots myself.

I haven't heard of the CH mod, but I'm glad it worked for you. Gab implemented the "retype the letters in this image" thing, and it works very well everywhere.

I know Gijs isn't here, and he probably wouldn't take offence even if he were, but it would be nice if you don't use the word "cheap" in association with any of us here, MTM. It's good that you explained, especially since as Krss pointed out you don't have the habit of using emoticons, but it's just generally not nice to imply that anyone is cheap, or anything that anyone does is cheap.

I hate spambots  I don't understand the thinking of spambots or spammers. Nowadays they don't even leave a link or try to sell anything, because all they want to know is whether your email is active so that they can sell your address to other spammers. I hate them with a passion.

Well, this exchange has been my cheap entertainment for the day.

(I think the phrase is more versatile than you give MTM credit for.)

It's not so much the phrase itself, but the way it was used. I would never refer to a friend in this way: "Where's Ben? I could use some cheap entertainment." It's not something I would say about someone I respect as a friend.

But hey, what do I know? I come from a different culture, after all. I just thought to point out how it could possibly come across as being offensive, since MTM didn't use emoticons to show he was joking at first. And though I don't really understand the spamming that goes on around here sometimes, I wouldn't go so far as to call it cheap.

Just thought I'd lay it all out now to prevent further misunderstandings later on. We have many different people from many different backgrounds coming together here, and where I come from, "cheap" as applied to people or actions can't possibly be anything positive, and in fact can be highly offensive.

(and edited to add: come to think of it, until now I have never heard it used in anything other than a negative or offensive way when applied to people or actions. So when you say it is a more versatile phrase than what I give it credit for, well, I don't understand how that can be so, either. Explain?)

Sorry for being so anal about this, but I think this is worth spelling out now.

With me, 'cheap entertainment' is invariably used as a kind of pseudo-insult, one that really isn't meant to offend anybody. I have a good friend back home at college, and I'd probably use that phrase to describe him. In fact, I'd be more inclined to use it around friends than people I don't know.

Sure, the adjective 'cheap' can be offensive, but as far as I'm concerned, not once you tack on 'entertainment.' Now, if I said somebody was a cheap two dolla ho, then you're starting to get mean. I think the problem is that you're perhaps separating the cheap from the entertainment, and the two really have to be together to 'get' the joke.

Heck, even my parents say I'm cheap entertainment, although much more literally. It doesn't cost anything to be around me, and I'm such an interesting, engrossing person. Yeah.

Thank you, Marion..

I avoided replying here again last night because I wasn't in the right mood for it, but now that Marion has very nicely started this discussion, I'll add what I think.

First, I think that a word is offensive when the person you call it takes offense. So it doesn't matter, for instance, if someone grew up calling his siblings b*itch and b*stard. If he goes into the world and calls people that, that's offensive. Yes, I know this example is stretching it, but I wanted to make a point. (I realize MTM apologized for a part of it, but then he continued with another offensive thing.)

Second, if a person gets offended by what you said, you need to apologize, not justify it and paint the other as way-touchy (that actually applies to Prael).

Third, in this particular case: MTM, once you read three killings in a row, you might have noticed what the thread was all about and stopped reading, instead of reading all eight pages of it and then calling it cheap. Moreover, this is a thread that was dead and gone long before you came on board; it wasn't intended to bore you, and we had our fun in a dedicated thread, which was over. We have stopped doing it since then. Why rehash it in a negative way? Twice?

When I started this board, I didn't lay out any rule, but I did say the main rule is "be nice". That's very important.

I'm not posting this to fan the flames of the argument; this is exactly why I refrained last night. But I still need to express my feelings, so that in the future no one will have to get offended by casual remarks.

I don't understand their thinking either! The ones I dealt with only filled up whole pages with completely useless information and a lot of links no one would ever follow anyway.. What's their point? Why do they even need email addresses, when they send gibberish?

Without making a diplomatic case out of it, I just want to add this: the "be nice" rule implies that if one talks about someone in his absence, he'll avoid saying anything that is not explicitely and utterly positive, because we do not know where the absent person is, we do not know if he/she is lurking nor do we know whether he/she will read the old posts once back.

I frequent some other boards (one of which with a greater degree of inconstance since I started here), and I know it is nice to find posts questioning my absence. I do not know how would I react though if I read some potentially questionable statements about me.

Said this, we know Gijs is not picky, hence I'd like to close the incidentfor good. Just please keep in mind that being "nice" does not necessarily mean post with a lot of  emoticons: being nice is an attitude and unfortunately it is one which can be defined only on the basis of how it is perceived from those we have relationships with.

As for spambots, they are a real plague. I get about 900 spam emails per month - luckily my gmail account handles them automatically, but still I wonder what would happen if I used my email extensively around the net.

Very well said, Santi.

As for this

being "nice" does not necessarily mean post with a lot of  emoticons: being nice is an attitude and unfortunately it is one which can be defined only on the basis of how it is perceived from those we have relationships with.

That's very true. I didn't mean to say that using a lot of  emoticons makes someone nice; but positive emoticons can definitely be used to express the fact that a statement is a joke, or at least intended as one. Whether the joke is offensive, that's another question.. so yes, attitude is very important, but I can handle things better if I can see a smile emote somewhere in there. Or at least a "j/k".

What I understand by "be nice" is the good old "if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything".

By the way, there is a huge difference between "cheap entertainment" and "free entertainment"..
