My girlfriend and I love animals of all kinds (except spiders still scare us, and I have never yet handled a snake, unlike her), but we have a particularly soft spot for tortoises, turtles, hippos, and frogs. Sorry it's taken me so long to reply, was digging out my tortoise photos then internet went on the blink for ages...
Thanks for my birthday wishes everyone! It was a lovely surprise! (especially as on my birthday I had to work 8.30am til 1am the next day  )
Simo: Yep, I took his photo when I went traveling in 2005. I visited the Galapagos and photographed the wildlife there. Here is a picture of me with one of the giant tortoises
(hope picture upload worked!)
They were gorgeous (and massive! The one above was a relatively small one). My avatar pic is my favourite photo, this tortoise was so inquisitive, and cute!

Wow! That is a terrific photograph! How I wish I may one day visit Galápagos myself. It is such a beautiful example for all the world to learn from, especially when it comes to so many fantastically diverse species living side by side.
(And as an old Star Trek fan, it seems to me a living embodiment of the concept of IDIC: Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations, and of how beauty comes from that. There is not a single war or genocide there to poison the process of life. Though of course even these islands are not safe from threats introduced by our own species.)
EDIT: Looking back on this post, I think it is probably a little "out there". Sorry about that. Anyway, the main point I wanted to get across is that those are lovely tortoise photos.
