Here's the place where we share lesser known factoids, for example things we know from our areas of expertise or read someplace obscure.

I'll start.

Did you know that in the Turing test an observer holds a natural language conversation with a person and a computer (hidden from view); and if the observer can't tell by the answers which one is the person and which one is the computer, the computer has passed the Turing test?

And that no computer has passed it yet?

That's really interesting to know. I'd like to know more about the test. What about the context? Is the "natural language" confined to proper English or is slang allowed?

It's an interesting thing. I'm not an expert on this, but I know that the test is supposed to be very general. The person is allowed to ask any kind of question, slang too, whatever he wants, and what the computer aims to do is not to prove its knowledge, but to simulate a human. That means to make errors from time to time, to be unsure, to be inconsistent, to not know the answer.. To react as naturally human as possible.

If it manages to do that, a computer is considered "intelligent". That speaks a lot about human arrogance, I think.

What is the main difficulty connected with "natural" conversation?

I'd say the main difficulty are the things that are said in a way and intended in another way, and especially if you need a lot of world knowledge to understand the implication. A simple example:

"Do you have the time?"

Well, when someone asks this question they obviously want to find out the time, but if you look at it literally you'd just answer "yes".

Or, let's say..

"Did you watch the Super Bowl yesterday?"
"I liked the commercials."

Now, a computer who must decide whether the second person watched or not must know that the Super Bowl is renowned for its funny commercials.

Oh no. I'd be classed as a computer, because... I didn't know the Super Bowl had funny commercials. *looks grimly around the room, realising why someone keeps trying to tell her to get an update. It must be an IT guy, and she must be a machine... Oh, the humiliation!*

Half-light, purblind streams where moonlight washes over trees / Lustred with a glow, as if from pearls upon the throat
Where the night's kiss lights upon her; rose's rhapsodies, / Warm as oils, imbue this bliss-fed hour with trembling note
"Where-? And who-?" Her breath's unspoken soul is light's perdue
That, hidden, seeks the unseen with a sigh… "Ah, L'inconnu!"

But, of course, then a computer could show it doesn't know about the Super Bowl commercials, and it'd be thought to be you.
